Maybe his date stood him up, walking by the place first to check him out. Coffee shops are notorious places to meet your blind dates. I used to sit, fully drunk, at various Portland coffee shops and try to find the Saturday afternoon blind dates and listen in on their conversations. It was fun. I wrote a zine about it, pre IPRC days, which nobody ever saw except FS5.
